After birth
You had the first night as a brand new family. Chances are you haven’t slept that much. The delivery has probably played itself out in your head a number of times and maybe your baby was restless or it was still difficult to get the baby to breastfeed properly. Fortunately, the maternity nurse (kraamzorg) will be at your door in no time and you can ask her all your questions! Take it easy with visitors and try to rest/sleep between 13:00h and 15:00h every day. Today the midwife will also visit your home to see how things are going, and to provide information and advice.
Check-ups mother
The maternity nurse (kraamzorg) will perform a number of checks on the mother every day. She will measure your temperature, your pulse, feel your abdomen to see if your uterus is sinking enough, look at your stitches and discuss details with you.
Baby check-ups
The maternity nurse will weigh the baby daily, measure his temperature, assess his diapers and assess his overall impression. She will also teach you how to care for, bathe and temperature your baby.
Weight baby
Don’t be alarmed if your baby has lost weight, this is normal in the first few days after giving birth. Babies may lose up to 10% of their birth weight. In the event of too much weight loss, the maternity nurse will consultate us, your midwife.
Nursing your baby
Put your baby on every 3 hours (or more often) to ensure that he/she gets enough and that your milk production starts up well. Sometimes it takes some practice before putting your baby to the breast goes smoothly. This is normal and the maternity nurse will help you with this.
If you give formula, you can give your baby 15-20ML formula every 3 hours from today.
Birth declaration
The birth must be registered with the municipality within 3 days. Make an appointment online for this on the site of the municipality in which your baby was born.
