Ultrasound Scans

During pregnancy, several ultrasounds are performed. An exciting moment! Did you know you can come to us for an ultrasound around 7 weeks of pregnancy? It’s the perfect time to take a look at your baby! It’s always a magical moment to see your baby for the first time, see the heartbeat, and notice the first small movements!

We offer all types of ultrasounds during pregnancy, so you don’t need to be referred to an ultrasound center – how convenient! Below is a timeline with information about each ultrasound.

Vitality Ultrasound 7-9 Weeks

The first ultrasound, exciting! During this ultrasound, we check if the baby’s heart (or multiple hearts…) is beating, if the baby is in the right position in the uterus, and estimate the baby’s size. We can provide a tentative due date, though it may change later in the pregnancy. We also examine the uterus and ovaries for any abnormalities. This ultrasound may be performed externally (via the abdomen) or internally (via the vagina). Please come with a full bladder, as this improves the quality of the external ultrasound image.

Dating Ultrasound 10-12 Weeks

This ultrasound is used to definitively establish the pregnancy’s timeline. We measure the baby from head to bottom and check if the baby’s development is progressing normally. We measure the heartbeat, and the baby is often already moving actively in your belly (though you won’t feel it yet). Did you know your baby is already fully formed at 10 weeks? Everything is already developed; your baby just needs to grow! The difference between this and the previous ultrasound is remarkable! Please come with a full bladder.

NT Scan (13-week scan) 12+3 – 14+3 Weeks

The 13-week scan is a medical ultrasound. This scan is performed by a specialist who checks for any physical abnormalities in the baby. The baby is examined from head to toe to ensure all organs and structures are developing properly. This scan lasts about 30-45 minutes. Please avoid bringing children under 12, as the sonographer needs to concentrate. The 13-week scan is not intended to determine the baby’s gender, as it’s still uncertain at this stage.

Gender Ultrasound from 15 Weeks

This ultrasound can determine the baby’s gender. We can tell you directly or write it down and email it if you want to keep it a secret. You’ll also receive some cute pictures of your baby’s face. This ultrasound is not covered by insurance and costs €40.

20-Week Scan (Anomaly Scan) 18+0 – 20+6 Weeks

This is another medical ultrasound used to check for physical abnormalities, such as an open back, skull defects, heart problems, etc. This scan lasts about 45 minutes. Please avoid bringing children under 12. The baby’s gender will be checked during this scan, but that is not its primary purpose.

3D Ultrasound from 26 Weeks

A fun ultrasound to see your baby’s face in 3D or even 4D if the baby is in the right position. You might even see your baby sucking its thumb or playing with its toes! You’ll receive all the images (including videos) on a USB stick, along with printed pictures. The cost for this scan is €75, and it lasts 30 minutes. You can schedule as many 3D ultrasounds as you like!

Growth Ultrasound

This ultrasound is done when there’s concern about the baby being too small or too large. We measure the baby’s belly, head, and upper thigh bone to estimate the baby’s weight. If necessary, multiple growth ultrasounds can be scheduled to monitor the baby’s growth curve.

Placental Location

If the placenta was found to be low-lying (close to the cervix) during the 20-week scan, a follow-up ultrasound may be scheduled at around 32 weeks to evaluate the placenta. Usually, by this time, the placenta has moved upward, and no further ultrasounds will be needed.

Amniotic Fluid Measurement

If you’re overdue (past 40 weeks), we may schedule an ultrasound to measure the amniotic fluid levels, as they can decrease toward the end of pregnancy. We want to ensure that the fluid levels remain sufficient.
