The mini-pill is a pill without the hormone estrogen. This pill is for women who are not allowed to use estrogens or if you are breastfeeding. There are fewer hormones in this pill, which reduces the chance of decreasing of the milk production. You take the pill every day (without a stop week). It is important to know that even if you forget to take the pill only for one day, you are not protected against pregnancy. That is why it is important to take the pill at a fixed time of the day, for example when you get up or brush your teeth.
+ Easy to take
+ Less chance of decreasing your milk production
+ Reliable form of birth control
– You have to take the pill daily
– Daily highs and lows in hormone release
– Your menstrual pattern can change, you cannot regulate it like with the ‘normal’ pill
– If you forget to take the pill or if you are sick (vomiting or diarrhea), the pill is no longer reliable and you must take additional contraceptives to protect against pregnancy
